{"id":1159,"date":"2010-05-14T12:36:01","date_gmt":"2010-05-14T12:36:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.benjeapes.com\/?p=1159"},"modified":"2022-08-26T08:29:39","modified_gmt":"2022-08-26T08:29:39","slug":"so-totally-not-twilight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.benjeapes.com\/index.php\/2010\/05\/so-totally-not-twilight\/","title":{"rendered":"So totally not Twilight"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m interested to see that my good friend\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sebastian_Rook\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sebastian Rook&#8217;s Vampire Plagues<\/a>\u00a0series has apparently been repackaged as\u00a0<em>Vampire Dusk<\/em>. This is quite a coincidence because there is already a quite successful series for children, also about vampires, currently available and named for a time of day. In fact, a time of day when the sun isn&#8217;t quite shining. I&#8217;m sure that the merest possibility of any kind of association has never at any point crossed the mind of anyone at Scholastic.<\/p>\n<p>Suspicion of bandwagon-jumping recedes further with even a cursory examination of the covers, which have gone from this:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_JWWitj1uFEg\/S-08R6nfh6I\/AAAAAAAABD4\/bZe3uLXeFMU\/s1600\/41T3Y0FXCSL._SL500_AA300_.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5471095400815364002\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_JWWitj1uFEg\/S-08R6nfh6I\/AAAAAAAABD4\/bZe3uLXeFMU\/s400\/41T3Y0FXCSL._SL500_AA300_.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>&#8230; to this.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_JWWitj1uFEg\/S-08SbG2udI\/AAAAAAAABEI\/ZMRvqLwuKls\/s1600\/513qZQB-AEL._SL500_AA300_.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5471095409536842194\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_JWWitj1uFEg\/S-08SbG2udI\/AAAAAAAABEI\/ZMRvqLwuKls\/s400\/513qZQB-AEL._SL500_AA300_.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>(Having a passing acquaintance with the text, I&#8217;m curious to know what happened to the second boy. The three heroes stick to the magic Harry-Ron-Hermione formula for pre-teen adventures of 2 boys to 1 girl [though there is a guest extra girl in the second book]. This is because boys only want to read about boys whereas girls will read about either gender: so, you get a boy for the boys, a girl for the girls, and another boy to make up for the girl. Sad but true.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe he&#8217;s on the back.)<\/p>\n<p>To continue with the covers for\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">the books I wrote<\/span>\u00a0the first three written by Sebastian:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_JWWitj1uFEg\/S-08ShufFvI\/AAAAAAAABEQ\/ppCEUZHU70E\/s1600\/517YxVYq7SL._SL500_AA300_.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5471095411313678066\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_JWWitj1uFEg\/S-08ShufFvI\/AAAAAAAABEQ\/ppCEUZHU70E\/s400\/517YxVYq7SL._SL500_AA300_.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_JWWitj1uFEg\/S-08SLvj7LI\/AAAAAAAABEA\/LWmm9mh7qvs\/s1600\/513qm%2BCHpbL._SL500_AA300_.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5471095405412609202\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_JWWitj1uFEg\/S-08SLvj7LI\/AAAAAAAABEA\/LWmm9mh7qvs\/s400\/513qm%2BCHpbL._SL500_AA300_.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Not only will you will discern a total absence of fruit, chess pieces and the like, but while the Twilight covers go out of their way to hide the fact that they are about a boy and a girl who have the dead hots for each other, <em>Vampire Dusk<\/em> advertises the total absence of sexual frisson by showing a couple of complete strangers who were photographed in the same room together one day, coincidentally whilst wearing sort of Victorian clothes. Also, by miniscule fractions, the boy&#8217;s expression changes. A bit.
