THE AUTHOR SPEAKS: RUSTIE NAMES
The author speaks I have a problem with aliens having convenient names like Worf or Chewbacca or Spock. It's too easy, especially when you consider some of the names already in existence amongst humans on planet Earth. Some languages, and names, can include clicks and whistles, but you won't get them on Star Trek.

Some SF authors go overboard in the other direction and make the name impossible to pronounce all at once: Kree'zwinksjs?koto. The problem there is that every time readers come across them, the story is put on hold for a moment while they take the name in.

Doing a literal translation of the First Breed names, and hence coming up with names that are complete nonsense, was a handy compromise. Arm Wild was the first Rustie to be named, which was quite easy: every subsequent Rustie name meant there was more precedent to go by which meant coming up with a new name was that little bit harder. Most, but not all, names follow the noun-adjective pattern: there's variation in the patterns of their names just as there are variations in our own. A Trek character might be able to say "in my society, people name themselves thus" but not one of mine. No way.
